Welcome to

Remembering our

this Memorial Day
Remembering Our Fallen

This is our May calendar of meetings and/or events taking place at the Post for the month of May, 2008. Post members, if you see a date that is not right or want something added, please e-mail the website administrator.

For the general public, remember that the VFW bar is open to you as well. You don't have to be a member to drink at the bar or eat at the Friday night meals. Come visit us.

Upcoming dates and events to remember:
  •  May 1: Loyalty Day is a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American Freedom. In 1958 Congress enacted Public Law 529 proclaiming Loyalty Day a permanent fixture on the nation's calendar.
  •  May 1: VFW Ladies Auxiliary meeting, 7 pm.
  •  May 9 & 10: Annual Sou to Nuts Sale, our annual sell-anything-indoor-garage-sale. Friday, May 9 (8:00am to 6:00pm) and Saturday, May 10 (9:00am to 4:00pm).
  •  May 14 & 17: Celebrity bartender night. Starting with the month of May, every second Wednesday from 7-9pm VFW Post 5040 will have a “Celebrity Bartender" behind the bar. On May 14, Sgt. Ralph Feely, a 30 year retired Chicago Policeman will be on hand. Ralph spent 22 years undercover, five years as robbery decoy, and also sings show tunes. Come down to listen to some stories, ask some questions, and have a good time.
  •  May 16 & 17: Poppy Days. Sign up at Post. There is a sign up board with time slots to fill and locations to sell Poppies at. We will be selling Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17. Funds are earmarked to helping Veterans. We need a lot of people to help fill time slots.
  •  May 18: Fair Diddley. On Fair Diddley day, the plan is to have a beer tent out in the VFW parking lot in which to sell beer and possibly some other concessions (similar to last year). We will also be opening up the parking lot for free motorcycle parking. We need a chairman to coordinate this effort. Volunteers are willing, but we need a chairman. Contact the Post (815)-338-5040.
  •  May 19: VFW Post 5040 meeting, 7 pm. Dinner for members only at 6:30 pm.
  •  May 21 (rain date May 22): Memorial Day flag placement at cemeteries around Woodstock. Meet at Post 8 am.
  •  May 26, 10 am: Memorial Day Ceremony on Woodstock Square. 11 am parade, 12 pm lunch at the Post. Any military person, current or prior, is welcome to walk or ride in the parade.
